I like this Eve Arnold photograph, from her book MARILYN MONROE - An Appreciation by Eve Arnold (published by Hamish Hamilton) on the set of THE MISFITS
in Nevada in late 1960, the film was released in 1961. I was 14 at the
time and remember all the publicity on the making of Huston's film - it
seemed every journalist and photographer was covering the shoot.
Arnold's pictures remain the best, both in her Monroe book and in her
later FILM JOURNAL - Eve Arnold label. More on THE MISFITS at MM label.
This shot
has Eli Wallach sitting on MM's lap ... Gable and Clift may have been
the bigger stars, but Wallach's resentful Guido is a fascinating character
and the equal of the others. What an astonishing career he has had,
taking in fluff like HOW TO STEAL A MILLION and GENGHIS KHAN as well as the Kazans and Tennessee Williams (BABY DOLL) etc. He is also part of THE VICTORS in 1963 teamed with Jeanne Moreau. It is fascinating too seeing the older wizened Wallach turning up now in his 90s in movies like Polanski's THE GHOST or NEW YORK I LOVE YOU. (I skipped THE HOLIDAY). Eli is another who worked with just about everyone then.
