Another great beauty on a Roman balcony, in 1960 ...

Two beauties actually: Vivien and Warren. I have already featured that fascinating 1960 film of Tennessee Williams' story THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS STONE here but finding some new stills makes it seem like a apt choice after THE GREAT BEAUTY and that 1960 Bolognini film reviewed here recently, FROM A ROMAN BALCONY ..... More on Mrs Stone at the Tennessee/Vivian/Warren labels.

  1. Seeing Warren in Rome, or a reasonable facsimile thereof, reminds me that this was around the time he visited that city to audition for Luchino Visconti. The great Italian director was considering him for the role of 'Tancredi' in "The Leopard". Horst Buchholz was also sought for that part, but he foolishly refused to audition, fearing that Visconti had ulterior motives. Warren had no qualms, though I can't imagine Visconti seriously considering anyone but Delon, in the end. It was all probably more of a ruse to scare the recalcitrant French star, as much as anything else.

  2. Hmm,i did not know that. Most of the Rome here was Shepperton Studios in England. Beatty was a hot young actor then and Visconti may have wanted to meet him, but (as on LILITH) Warren made every movie about himself, so I couldn't see him playing second fiddle to Lancaster.

Sarah Miles has recounted recently that she was an extra on MRS STONE, and of course Warren paid her some attention to the chagrin of Leigh. Next time I see it I must see if I can spot her, maybe in the party scene ...
