What star wattage for 1961: Tracy, Lancaster, Widmark, Dietrich, Schell, Garland and Clift. The film JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBURG - I should dig the dvd out sometime - was rather a plod as I remember, very Stanley Kramer, but Garland and Clift electrified during their cameo appearances.
The film is a challenge to watch, partly the pace and partly the grim subject matter but the acting across the board doesn't disappoint. Judy and Monty get the flashy roles but Lancaster, Tracy and Widmark all handle their measured soberness well and Marlene makes her sad uncertain widow terribly moving. The one performer who never did much for me is Schell, he was fine of course, he was an excellent actor, but I' don't understand the Oscar he was awarded. I wasn't compelled by his work the way I was by his competitor Paul Newman in The Hustler.
ReplyDeleteThanks for remembering a scrupulously well-done film, Michael. Both Monty and Judy were robbed at the Oscars. I still can't believe that those two awards went to Moreno and Chakiris for WSS. But, of course, that film swept the awards that year.
ReplyDeleteI rather liked it. The acting was, of course, terrific and Schell deserved his Oscar. Both Clift and Garland should have won as well.
