Sunday sunday

It looks like shaping up to be a good week:
A film I have been waiting for, Michael Haneke's AMOUR finally opens here .... and it looks like being one of the year's most memorable, starring Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmaneulle Riva, both now in their 80s; it looks like being the most successful international hit of the year, after its Palme D'Or win at Cannes. 

That Rolling Stones documentary CROSSFIRE HURRICANE, which played at the London Film Festival, gets screened on the BBC next Saturday night - should be compulsive too.

And nice to see Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW is scheduled (it always repays another look) 

and Apichatpong Weerasethakul's UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES (2000s label) screened on one of our main channels, Channel4 - as well as Andrew Haigh's WEEKEND (review at gay interest label) - that should bring them bigger audiences. 

Then there is that batch of new rarities (below) to get started on .... and beginning to think about Christmas .... it creeps up on one ! 

Our Sky Arts channel is proving essential as well - they are now running a series BRITISH LEGENDS OF STAGE & SCREEN, eight interviews of an hour each, with 8 luminaries discussing their careers: fascinating to see Glenda Jackson, Ian McKellen, Diana Rigg, Michael York, Claire Bloom, Michael Gambon, Derek Jacobi and Christopher Lee here. They are running an interview a week, and the 8 are also now on dvd. 
Claire Bloom, a very spry 80, was delightful and very illuminating in yesterday's interview, looking back on her long career and long relationship with Richard Burton.  She also gave a wicked impression of Elizabeth Taylor on the set of THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD ... 

We have liked Jean-Louis Trintignant in so many movies: UN HOMME ET UNE FEMME, Z, THE CONFORMIST (Italian label), AND GOD CREATED WOMAN, MY NIGHT WITH MAUD, LES BICHES, FINALLY SUNDAY,  LE JEU ET LE VERITE, ATLANTIS - one of the great French actors, along with Gabin, Delon, Belmondo, Ronet.  

Emmaneulle Riva too is one of the great French actresses, particularly in LEON MORIN PRIEST with Belmondo - (French label.) It will be good to see them together in AMOUR.

Interesting interview with 81 year old Trintignant in latest "Sunday Times" plus another glowing review of the film - it should be the SKYFALL for the art-house set, but I imagine it will crossover and it and the Bond film will be the must-sees for the winter season.
