Saturday favourites ....

Time out with some perennial favourites ....

Dirk and Rock were both filming in the Italian mountain region The Dolomites in 1957 (CAMPBELL'S KINGDOM, A FAREWELL TO ARMS) so a photo-opportunity was a good time for them to meet and presumably chat about their respective closets? Wouldn't it have been be fun to have listened in...

Below: That evening out in 1959 when 3 girls about town met up with their gay best friend, maybe at the Ritz bar, or Claridges ? Thats Vivien Leigh, Kay Kendall, Lauren Bacall and Noel Coward. We would love to join them for drinks and some witty high end gossip. As I said before (Showpeople label), Kay departed in September that year, but Bacall (The Woman Who Knew Everyone) is still here 50+ years later ....
Saturday afternoon movie is Aldrich's 1962 SODOM AND GOMORRAH, hardly suitable for a kids' matinee with all that violence - there are lots of attractive men and skimpily-clad women to watch. My favorite line: "Be careful of Sodomite patrols!" and Anouk Aimee at her slinkiest as the lesbian queen Bera with that penchant for dancing slave girls, Stanley Baker at his pouting best as her evil brother, dear Stewart Granger with those sideburns, there's also Pier Angeli, HELEN OF TROY Rosanna Podesta and Scilla Gabel, coming to a sticky end as usual.... Below: Aldrich with his cast ... it all builds to a delirious climax as Sodom is hit by what looks like a nuclear bomb ... and don't forget the pillar of salt!
Aldrich of course went on to WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? next - so a nice opportunity to re-post this clever "Films & Filming" cover from 1963 - "You like Bette Davis, you like Joan Crawford , but will you like Bette Davis AND Joan Crawford together in ...." plus a few more of their stylish covers. (I used to work at the magazine, which folded in 1990, so have lots of back issues - as I had been a reader of it since I was 16. Those '60s and '70s issues are just terrific - as per label.
