Annie Girardot RIP

One of France's greatest actresses Annie Girardot has died aged 79. One of her famous roles is Nadia the prostitute in Luchino Visconti's epic ROCCO AND HIS BROTHERS (1960). Nadia's beauty drives a wedge between Rocco and his brother Simone (Renato Salvatori), who eventually rapes her, and there is a horrifying murder sequence. In contrast to their violent on-camera relationship, Girardot and Salvatori married in 1962. They had a daughter, Giulia, and later separated but never divorced (Salvatori died in 1988).

In a very prolific career other movies of hers include Lelouch's VIVRE POUR VIVRE, the successful follow-up to his UN HOMME ET UNE FEMME, with Montand in '67 and with Delon as the DOCTOR IN THE NUDE. In 2002, she was awarded the César Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in THE PIANO TEACHER. She had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease since 2006.

1960: what a year for prostitutes! Liz in BUTTERFIELD 8, Gina in GO NAKED IN THE WORLD, Melina in NEVER ON SUNDAY, Annie Girardot in ROCCO, Shirley Jones in ELMER GANTRY, Nancy Kwan in THE WORLD OF SUZIE WONG, Anne Francis in GIRL OF THE NIGHT, Capucine's saloon girl in NORTH TO ALASKA and a few in PEEPING TOM!
